イングルウッドが見知らぬ男のあとから下宿屋に入ると、その男が熱心に（しかも彼個人の意見を）話しかけているせいで、デューク夫人が困っている場面に遭遇した。太って、おどおどした夫人が目をみはって、まるで死んだ魚のように、体の大きな紳士に向かいあっていたのは、彼が下宿したいと丁重に申し出たからで、その男は片方の手には白の幅広の帽子を、もう片方の手には黄色の旅行鞄を持って、そうした荷物を大仰な身振りでしめしていた。幸いなことに、デューク夫人よりも手際のいい姪とその友人が家の中にいたおかげで、契約をむすぶことができた。実際、家中のすべての人々が、その部屋に集まってきた。この事実は、たしかに、この話全体の特色をよくあらわしていた。訪問者は、喜劇における山場の雰囲気をつくりだした。彼は家の中に入ってきたときから、そこを去るときまで、どうにか自分のもとに集まって、嘲りながらも追いかけてくれる仲間をみつけたのだが、それは子供たちがパンチとジュディーを集め、追いかけていくときのようであった。
When Inglewood followed the stranger into the boarding-house, he found him talking earnestly (and in his own opinion privately) to the helpless Mrs. Duke. That fat, faint lady could only goggle up like a dying fish at the enormous new gentleman, who politely offered himself as a lodger, with vast gestures of the wide white hat in one hand, and the yellow Gladstone bag in the other. Fortunately, Mrs. Duke’s more efficient niece and partner was there to complete the contract; for, indeed, all the people of the house had somehow collected in the room. This fact, in truth, was typical of the whole episode. The visitor created an atmosphere of comic crisis; and from the time he came into the house to the time he left it, he somehow got the company to gather and even follow (though in derision) as children gather and follow a Punch and Judy.
