「イームズ博士が、疲れているけれど、まだ話をしたそうな顔で背後をふりかえると、そこに見いだしたのは小さくて、丸い、黒い穴がひとつ、その穴は鋼鉄でできた六角の小円で縁どられ、その上部には太釘のようなものが突き出ていた。それは鋼の目のように彼を見据えた。こうして永遠に思われる時がながれ、そのあいだに彼の理性は吹っ飛んでしまったが、それでも彼にはそれが何であるのか分かっていなかった。それから、そのむこうに彼が見たものとは装填された銃であり、今にも火をふこうとしているレボルバーであった。さらにそのむこうには、紅潮させながらも、幾分真面目なスミスの顔があり、その表情はあきらかに変わることなく、かつてよりも穏やかでさえあった。
