それから質問をうけることだろう。『なぜ彼は中年になるまで滑稽な存在であり続けるのだろうか？ なぜ多くの間違った告訴に身をさらしているのだろうか？』これに対して私はこう答えるのみである。彼は心から幸せだから、根っから陽気だから、生き生きとした男だから、そうしているのだと。彼はとても若いものだから、庭の木々に登ったり、馬鹿げているけれど実際に役立つ冗談を言ったりする。私たちもかつて同じようなことをしては抱いた思いに、彼は今でもかられているというわけだ。それでもまだ、人々のなかでも彼だけが、なぜ飽くことを知らぬ愚かさにとりつかれているのかと訊かれるかもしれない。そのときは、とても単純な答えを述べるだけだ。認めがたいものかもしれないが。
