答えは一つあるのだが、残念ながら、その答えを気に入っていただけないかもしれない。もしイノセントが幸せだとするなら、それは彼に悪意がない（イノセント）からだ。もし彼がしきたりに挑んだとしても、それは彼が掟を守るからだ。彼のやりたいこととは殺しではなくて、人生にわくわくすることだから、学校にかよう男の子のようにピストルにわくわくするんだ。彼が盗みをしたがらないのも、隣人の品物を欲しがらないのも、たくらみを企てたからなんだ。（ああ、その企みに私たちはどれほど憧れていることか）自分の品物を自分のものにしたがるというたくらみなんだ。彼がロマンスをもとめるのは、不義を働きたいからではないんだ。彼が百回もハネムーンをくりかえすのは、ただ一人の妻を愛しているからなんだ。もし彼が本当に男を殺したのなら、本当に女を見捨てたのなら、ピストルのことも、ラブレターのことも歌のように感じることはありえないだろう。少なくとも喜劇の歌のようには感じないだろう。

“There is but one answer, and I am sorry if you don’t like it. If Innocent is happy, it is because he IS innocent. If he can defy the conventions, it is just because he can keep the commandments.
