その遺書は、ナン・メイにそこにあるすべてのものを贈るという旨のものであったので、彼女の手に遂行がゆだねられることになった。アイザックおじさんは、その前の日、小屋に戻る途中で長々と話をはじめたが、回りくどい言い方で、抜け目なく意図を隠しながら、これ見よがしに何気ない口調で、遺言のことにふれてきた。だが、そうしたところで何も彼のものにならないということは、姪が教えてくれた遺言のあらましからわかっていた。彼女は抗うかのように、明日になるまで遺書をひらこうともしなければ、見せようともしなかった。もちろん遺産を期待する気持ちは彼にもほとんどなかったが、それでも自分はアイザックおじさんなのだ。経験も積んでいるし、法律にも心得があって、一家の知恵袋なのである。それなのに自分が財産を処理することもなければ、それを売ることもなく、管理を任されることもない。さらに財産を分与されないなんて、ごく控えめに言ってみても、少しひどすぎる。そう考えたせいか、骨惜しみをしたい気持ちにかられてしまい、算術を要することがらから手をひくことにした。
