「それは」私は訊ねました。「どうしてなのでしょうか」

「なぜなら、そうしなければ」彼は言いながら、手にした棒で空を、暗黒の空間をしめしました。「あそこに見えるものを崇拝してしまうだろう」

「なにが言いたいのですか？」私は訊ねました。

「永遠だよ」彼は乾いた声で言いました。「幻影のなかでも一番大きいものさ。神のライバルたちのなかでも最強の存在だ」

「おっしゃりたいのは自然崇拝とか無限とか、そういうことなんですね」私は返答しました。

“`I dare say,’ I said. `What reason?’

“`Because otherwise,’ he said, pointing his pole out at the sky and the abyss, `we might worship that.’

“`What do you mean?’ I demanded.

“`Eternity,’ he said in his harsh voice, `the largest of the idols— the mightiest of the rivals of God.’

“`You mean pantheism and infinity and all that,’ I suggested.
