さて最初の妻の話をしよう。そこで気がつくのは常軌を逸した恋人の存在だ。彼は「ロバみたいな馬鹿者」と言われると、ロバはいつでも人参を追いかけるからと答えた。そうした考え方は、レディ・ベリントンによれば意味もないものだし、村の愚か者たちが食卓でで話題にするような類のものだ。でも、そうした話が意味をもってくるのは、ポリーの髪が赤いと考えるときである。その次の妻の話に進もう。彼が女子校から連れ出した女性だ。ミス・グリッドレーの言葉によれば、問題の娘は赤茶のドレスを着ていて、その服装は更にあたたかみのある髪の色によく似合っていた。言い換えれば、娘の髪は赤茶よりも赤い色ということになる。最後にロマンチックなオルガン弾きが事務所で吟じた詩の件だが、それはわずか数語しかわからない。

Lastly, the romantic organ-grinder declaimed in the office some poetry that only got as far as the words,—
