なおかつ家賃は下がるだろうと、人々はすばやく頭をめぐらした。すばやい頭の働きこそが、ジェイゴウでは大いに物をいった。そこで好まれるのは、一ヶ月後にもらえる定期収入の仕事よりも、一シリングの日雇い労働だった。神父が宣言してから現われた効果とはまず、消失することになる家の貸し間に借り手がおしよせ、すでにその家に住み着いている者が立ち退くのだから、そこに宿を貸してくれと言ってきたことだが、冷静に相手をみてみると、ろくでもない住人だということがわかった。借り手はすっかり落胆したが、住人の方は望んでいた以上の幸運を手にいれたわけだ。思いがけないことが起きたのだ。新しい建物を建てる償いの金が保障されたのだ。だが、そのために多くの者が、家を取り壊されると避難所を探すのに四苦八苦することになることも、需要が生じるせいで家賃があがるだろうということも、スタート神父にはわかっていた。だから貸間を貸せるあいだは、しばらく何も言うまいと心に決めた。
