「まあ、それでしたら結構です」女は即断した。「お手数をおかけしましてすみませんでした。では、失礼します」それは青年が求めていた言葉でもなければ、返答に窮する言葉でもなかった。そこで彼はわざと頑なな態度をとりながら、もし彼女が金額を提示すれば、事務所は金額を増やかすもしれないと仄めかした。やがてすべてが四十ポンドの小切手をきるという文書をかわすことで終わった。この取引は、たしかに大きな取引だった。通常の取引では、収集物に八十ポンド以上の金額を払おうとしたことは滅多にないからだ。
こうして老人のささやかな遺品が集められた。内国税庁が財産から税金をさしひくと、もうサマーセット・ハウスを訪れる必要もなくなった。だが森の家を買おうとする者は、誰もいなかった。

And so the old man’s little affairs were gathered up, and the Inland Revenue took its bite out of the estate, and there were no more journeys to Somerset House. But nobody would buy the cottage.
