そうかと思えば再び、世界は広大な天国に思えてきたので、彼は腰かけ、はるか彼方を夢みるのであった。クランク軸やピストンの設計図と断面図を描いていた筈なのに、いつのまにかN.SとJ.Mという文字のモノグラムをデザインしている自分に、彼は気がついた。悲しくも愚かな青年となってしまい、他の誰もが味わったことのないような状況にいた。
だが天使があらわれた。正確にいえば、ふたりの天使があらわれた。ふたりともでっぷりとしていたが、ある夜、その天使たちはやってくると、ジョニーに救いの手をさしのべてくれた。辻馬車に乗ってやってきたふたりとは、男とその妻であった。その意図は、「絶望をいやす場」を自分たちの目で確かめてみようということだけだった。ふたりはあまり信じていなかったが、この学校がイースト地区の奥にあり、ホワイトチャペルよりも先にある学校で、そのせいで疑いようもなく、地下室の土よりも深いところにある場所で、その悪行も底知れないはずなのに、若い男女が、健全な舞踏場の集まりで踊っていて、わめくように歌う者もいなければ、クォート瓶をかかえてドシドシ歩く者もいないと聞かされていた。また踊る前には、礼儀にかなった作法で相手を紹介することまでしているので、あまりに不似合な様子に、笑いをこらえることができないという話も聞かされていた。そこで疑りふかい二人がウエスト・エンド（ベイズウォーターにすぎなかった）から、辻馬車でやってきて、自分たちの目で事情を確かめにきたのだ。
And again, because the world was now grown so many heavens wider, he would sit and dream of things beyond its farthest margin yet. And between plan and section, crank-shaft and piston, he would wake to find himself designing monograms of the letters N. S. and J. M. Altogether becoming a sad young fool, such as none of us ever was in the like circumstances.
But an angel—two angels, to be exact, both of them rather stout—came one night to Johnny’s aid. They came all unwitting, in a cab, being man and wife, and their simple design was to see for themselves the Upraising of the Hopeless Residuum. They had been told, though they scarce believed, that at the Institute, far East—much farther East than Whitechapel, and therefore, without doubt, deeper sunk in dirt and iniquity—the young men and women danced together under regular ball-room conventions, neither bawling choruses nor pounding one another with quart pots. It was even said that partners were introduced in proper form before dancing—a thing so ludicrous in its incongruity as to give no choice but laughter. So the two doubters from the West End (it was only Bayswater, really) took a cab, to see these things for themselves.
