彼らはふたたび、最初に通りがかった木のそばを通った。そして瓶と刷毛をその根本に置くと、老人はランタンを頼りに、ひきよせられてきた蛾を何匹か採取した。その木から、彼はランタンを移動していき、一巡する経路にある次の木にたどり着くと、また次の木に移動していった。蛾を採取するあいまに彼が語り続けるのは、先達に敬意をあらわすための、おだやかで、漠とした講義であった。

From this he carried the lantern to the next tree in the round and then to the next, filling the intervals between his moth-captures with successive chapters of a mild and rather vague lecture on respect for elders.
