それでも、「ロット」と呼ばれる組織は、銃、鋼鉄のわな、柔毛や羽につつまれた死体のせいで捕まった仲間を除外することが時々あった。そして残された仲間は団結して、疑いと嫌悪のまざった目で老人をみるのであった。以前、何日間にもわたって、老人は疑われたことがあった。ボブ・スモールピースに頼まれ、このうえなく野蛮な鹿泥棒の件を教えたのではないかと疑われたのだ。その泥棒事件で目をひいたのは、縛られた子鹿と、心配そうな雌鹿の姿であった。いずれも重い石で、脚をくだかれ、喉を切られていた。だが管理人が気づいたのは、老メイではなく他が原因だということが判明した。老メイへの疑念が消え去ったのは、泥棒が鞭で打たれ、血まみれになりながら、警察の独房に連れていかれたという知らせのおかげだった。泥棒は、血だらけの鹿をのせた手押し車をひいていった。今でも、ボブ・スモールピースは小屋の入り口ににやりと笑みをうかべながら姿を見せるのだが、そのときの乱戦で歯を二本失ったときの様子とは、雰囲気はまったく別であった。

Even now as Bob Smallpiece grinned in at the cottage door one saw the gap where two teeth had gone in that “up-and-downer.”
