すぐに彼の能力は、事情を分析しはじめた。もう一度、手紙を読んでみた。さらにもう一度、読んでみた。そこには「すべてが終わった」とあり、彼にその話をしなかったことを許してほしいとあった。何の話をしたかったのだろう？ 彼女は、今も、何も話してくれていなかった。学校には、もう来ないだろう。だが、彼女の住所を知らなかった。それなのに彼女を探しだそうとしてはいけないのだ。でも、「新聞に書かれたすべてのせいで」とあった。こうなれば、新聞を見なくてはいけない。なぜ、状況を把握するのに、こんなに時間がかかるのだろうか。彼は図書室へ行くと、テーブルの上に散らかった新聞と雑誌の山にあたった。次から次へと彼は新聞を探し、また探してという作業を繰り返した。だがノラにつながりそうな記事を見つけることはできなかった。とうとう、一昨日の、不要になった新聞を見つけたが、その新聞にはコーヒーの染みが輪になってついていた。「警察の知性」という記事が上段にあり、真ん中の記事に、イタリック体で書かれたエンマ・サンソンという名前に彼の目は釘づけになった。彼女は四十一歳で、泥酔と故意の器物損傷で訴えられていた。その記事はさらに続き、稲妻がおちたかのように、すべてのものが一瞬で破壊されたと書いてあった。彼も、土曜日に、その犯罪行為を証言していた。エンマ・サンソンは、エンマ・パーシーの結婚後の名前で、少年たちが酔っぱらいのマザー・ボーンと呼んでいる女だった。そして、その女がノラの母親だった。

A sentence more, and everything stood displayed, as by a flash of lightning; for he had witnessed the offence himself, on Saturday. Emma Sansom was the married name of Emma Pacey, whom the boys called Mother Born-drunk; and the woman was Nora’s mother!
