聖職者の仲間にたいして、無理もないことですが、疑いつづけていると、高さがあまりない梯子を見つけました。それは道より一段高いところへとかかっていました。思慮に欠けた仲間が梯子にわっと駈けよったものですから、私も後をついていくしかありませんでした。梯子をのぼり、私が足をおろした小道は、見たこともないくらい狭い場所でした。こんなに狭い通路を歩かなければいけなくなったことはありません。その通路の片側は、暗い闇につつまれ、最初、しっかりと密に茂った藪らしいものが繁茂していました。ややして、それが藪ではないことに気がつきました。高さのある木々の頂きだったのです。この私が、英国の紳士であり、英国国教会の聖職者である私が、まるで雄猫のように庭の塀の上を歩いていたのです。
