しかし長いこと開き戸を見はしなかった。下の方から輝く部屋の様子が見え、それは異常な魅力をはなっていたからだ。こんなに奇妙な角度から、忘れられた戸をぬけて、現代風のインテリアのなかに入っていくなんて、ひとの心理において記念すべき事件であった。四次元を見つけたようなものであった。
相棒は隙間から室内にいきなり音もなく入り込んだので、私はそのあとについていくより他になかった。だが犯罪行為において実践を積んでいないため、まったく音をたてないという訳にはいかなかった。私の深靴の響きが消える前に、大柄な強盗は扉にすばやく駆け寄ると半ば押し開けた。そして階段の方に目をこらして立ち、耳をすました。それから扉をまだ半分開けたままにして、部屋の中央まで戻ると、家具や装飾に青い目をきょろきょろとはしらせた。
