我らがウィンターボトムも世間をあざけりながら、こう言い切っている。「稀な存在ではあるが、素晴らしい肉体をもつ或る人々にとって、一夫多妻制とは女性の多様性を認識するものにすぎない。友愛というものが、男性の多様性を認識するものであのと同じことである」どちらにしても、多様性をもとめる傾向は、信頼できる調査からも認められている。こうした傾向は、たとえば黒人女に先立たれた男やもめが第二の妻として、アルビノのと結婚をするようなことなどに多く認められる。こうした傾向のひとは、パタゴニアの女性の大きな抱擁から解放されると、想像力豊かな本能がはたらいて、エスキモーの心慰められる姿へと行き着く。この傾向に、被告が属していることは明らかである。もし行き当たりばったりの運命や耐えがたい誘惑が、そうした人々の弁明となるのなら、被告にはあきらかに理由がある。
