並外れたスミスは、煙突上部の通風管にまたがったところで、グールドが続いていないことに気がつき、その子供じみたて親切なところやら、善良な性質やらに駆り立てられ、屋根裏へと潜り込んで、グールドを元気づけ、登ってくるように説き伏せようとした。イングルウッドとムーンだけが、スレート屋根の長く、灰緑色の棟に取り残されると、二人は樋に足をかけ、煙突の通風管にもたれ、互いを不可知論者らしい様子で見つめていた。彼らが最初にいだいた感情とは、ふたりは永遠のなかに入ってきたのだというものであり、また、その永遠とは逆さまの世界であった。ふたりに思い浮かんだ永遠の定義とは―彼が入った世界とは、明瞭で、明るい無知の光に照らされたところで、すべての信念がはじまったところだということであった。
