私には、彼が何を言おうとしているのか見当がつきませんでした。でも相手が笑っていましたので、さしあたり不可解な旅を続けることにしました。そうするうちに私たちはとても奇妙な道へと出ました。そこはこむら返りをおこした場所で、舗装された道でした。その端の開きっぱなしになっている木の門を通り抜け、気がつくと、闇も、霧も濃くなっています。家庭菜園を横切っている、踏みならされた小道のようなところをとおりました。前を歩いている大男へ呼びかけましたところ、「これは近道だから」という返事がぼんやりとかえってきました。
