こうした一連の出来事の最中に、ホーキンスはやってきた。もし彼がホクストンのすべての男を呪うなり、破門するなり、地獄へ行けとでも言うなりすれば、彼のことを少しは賛美したことだろう。さらに市場で焼かれてしまえばいいと彼らに言ったなら、私は忍耐強く、すべての善良なるキリスト教徒が他人にあたえる悪事というものにも我慢したことだろう。だがホーキンスは、聖職者としての手腕に欠けている。いや、どんな類の手腕も持ち合わせていない。彼には聖職者になることが出来ない。大工になることも、辻馬車の御者になることも、園丁や漆喰工になることも出来ないように。彼は完璧な紳士である。それが彼の不満なのである。彼は自分の信条を押し付けはしない。ただ、自分の階級を押し付ける。彼はその呪わしい演説のなかで、信仰に関する言葉を一言も言いはしない。彼が言うことときたらすべて、兄である少佐なら言っただろうことだ。天国からの声が私に教えてくれる。彼には兄が一人いて、その兄は少佐なのだと。
“On the top of all this comes Hawkins. If he had cursed all the Hoxton men, excommunicated them, and told them they were going to hell, I should have rather admired him. If he had ordered them all to be burned in the market-place, I should still have had that patience that all good Christians have with the wrongs inflicted on other people.
